Losing the baby belly has always sounded like hard work, many celebrities opt for the “mummy tuck” after a C-section to avoid the rigorous hard labour that such a feat seems to entail, yet with just a few simple tasks incorporated into your daily routine of nappies, winding, feeding and broken nights, you can lose that baby fat without even thinking about it.
1) Breastfeeding – I’m not going to preach about how breastfeeding is great for the baby, I’m sure your midwife and health visitor has already detailed the benefits, but did you know just how good breastfeeding is for you?
Your uterus will shrink down to the size of a peanut in next to no time, you’re allowed an extra 500 calories a day, (that’s a whole hour of high impact aerobics, DAILY), and if you’re lucky, like me, your stomach will become flatter and harder than it ever was before pregnancy. It really is a miracle.
2) Winding the baby – It’s a chore that has to be done, a windy baby will not settle when there’s air just waiting to escape. The smiles may be cute but the colic isn’t. If you sit the baby on your knee with her back flat against your stomach then rock backwards and forwards in a rocking motion, a burp will escape in no time, and your stomach crunches for the day are done!
3) Cuddles- All babies love cuddles, but you do have to crack on with housework. Use a sling, keep baby close, and whilst you’re completing the daily chores, baby is secure and you’re burning off an extra calorie a minute with the added weight! Your posture must be spot on for this one, tummy in, back straight, so all the while your abdominals are strengthening.
4) Playtime – babies love interaction. A favourite game of ours is if you lay flat on your back, place baby in the grooves between your outstretched legs, then rise up to play peek a boo! Yours quads will thank you, and so will your baby!
As you can see, there’s no cabbage diet, no ten mile runs, and no tummy tucks, just pure and simple enjoyment with baby, and a little bit of me time thrown in for good measure. Who says you can’t have it all on a budget?
